The return trip from Aguas Calientes to Cusco gets planned less carefully than the way in, and it is where most itineraries get into trouble. Last trains back fill up early, and you do not want to be stranded in a town where every hotel costs more than Cusco.

Peruways sells across both operators (PeruRail and Inca Rail) on one page, so you can compare the 15:20, 16:22, 18:10 and 21:50 departures without flipping tabs.

What you’re actually choosing between

Trains run from Machu Picchu Pueblo station (Aguas Calientes) back to Ollantaytambo in 90 minutes. From Ollantaytambo you can continue by train to Poroy (dry season) or Wanchaq, or take the shared van or private transfer back to Cusco in about two hours.

Service class

Expedition and Voyager are the budget options. Vistadome and 360 add panoramic windows and snacks. The Hiram Bingham is a different ride entirely — lounge car, dinner, pisco sours — and runs on its own evening schedule.

Timing

Most day-trippers take the 15:20 or 16:22 back. If you want to see the citadel at sunset light, the 18:10 and 21:50 open that up.

Book early

Peak-season return trains (June through August) sell out weeks ahead. Book both legs at the same time.
