Vinicunca — Rainbow Mountain — sits at 5,200 m in the Cordillera Vilcanota, three hours south-east of Cusco. The red, ochre and turquoise bands come from iron, sulphur and copper oxidising in sedimentary layers that only emerged in the last decade as the summit glacier retreated. It is a long day: 4 a.m. pickup, two to three hours of hiking up thin air, back in Cusco by late afternoon.

The route from Cusco passes Checacupe and climbs onto the Pampachiri plateau. Local Quechua guides from the communities who hold the land lead the hike, and alpaca and vicuña herds share the trail.

Peruways runs small-group day trips to Vinicunca with hotel pickup in Cusco, breakfast and lunch, and horses available for anyone struggling with altitude. The Palcoyo alternative — three gentler ridges at 4,900 m — is a lower-effort option if you want the colours without the summit climb.

Plan around late April through early November for the dry season, when the colours stay sharp and the trail isn’t muddy. Book your day with Peruways and we’ll put you in a group of six to twelve, with a Quechua-English or Quechua-Spanish guide.
