Vinicunca — Rainbow Mountain — is the striped ridge about 100 km southeast of Cusco. Iron oxide, copper and iron sulphide in sedimentary rock give the slopes reds, greens and yellows; the colours were only widely visible after glacial retreat around 2015.

Day trips from Cusco involve a 3am departure, three-hour drive, and a 3 km one-way walk from the trailhead at 4,800 m to the viewpoint at 5,036 m. The distance is short; the altitude is what makes it hard. Horses are available on the steep sections for around 100 soles.

Peruways runs the trip with transport, breakfast, a licensed guide and the option to detour to Red Valley — a quieter striped ridge about 20 minutes off the main viewpoint, often the better shot.

Book at Peruways, give yourself two or three days in Cusco first to acclimatise, and aim for the dry season (May–September) when the colours are sharpest.
