Discover Peru’s Rainbow Mountains: A Colorful Journey Through Nature’s Masterpiece

Vinicunca — the Rainbow Mountain — sits at 5,200 m in the Cordillera Vilcanota, three hours south-east of Cusco. The red, ochre, mustard and turquoise bands came from iron, sulphur and copper oxidising in sedimentary layers that only emerged in the last decade as the summit glacier retreated. Palcoyo, three hours in the same direction, offers three gentler rainbow ridges at 4,900 m for travellers who want the colours without Vinicunca’s altitude.

The hike from the Cusipata parking area to the Vinicunca viewpoint is about 1.5 hours up, climbing from 4,800 m to 5,200 m. Horses are available for the ascent — most travellers hike up and ride down. Palcoyo is a 45-minute flat walk from its own trailhead.

Peruways runs small-group day-trips from Cusco: 4 a.m. hotel pickup, breakfast on the way, Quechua guides from the local community, lunch in the valley, back in the city by late afternoon. Dry season (April to October) is the time to go — the bands are sharpest in bright sun, and the trail isn’t muddy.
