Vinicunca — Rainbow Mountain — sits about 100 km southeast of Cusco at 5,036 metres. Iron oxide, copper and iron sulphide in sedimentary rock give the ridge its striped colours; glacial retreat around 2015 made the slopes visible.
Peruways runs day trips from Cusco: 3am departure, three-hour drive, 3 km each way from the trailhead at 4,800 m to the viewpoint. The distance is short, the altitude is the challenge. Horses are available on the steep sections for around 100 soles.
Add Red Valley — a quieter striped ridge 20 minutes off the main viewpoint — if you have the time; it’s often the better shot. The guides can route you there.
Book through Peruways. Give yourself two or three days in Cusco first to acclimatise. Aim for the dry season (May–September) when the colours are sharpest and the trail isn’t a mudslide.
