Machu Picchu Mountain is the taller of the two summits above the citadel — 3,082 m, roughly 650 metres above the ruins — and the gentler of the two hikes. Wider trail, no exposed cables, longer and more sustained than Huayna Picchu across the way.
The climb takes 3 to 4 hours round trip on a well-maintained stone staircase through cloud forest. The payoff at the top is a direct view down onto the citadel, Huayna Picchu opposite, and the Urubamba curling 1,000 metres below — the whole site laid out at once.
Permits cap at 400 per day in two slots (7–8am and 9–10am), and need the Circuit 3 entry ticket. In the dry season (May–September) permits sell out weeks ahead.
Peruways reserves the permit, entry ticket, train and Consettur bus together. See the options at Peruways.
