The train to Machu Picchu is split between two operators — PeruRail (Belmond-owned) and Inca Rail — on a single-track line that follows the Urubamba River down from the Sacred Valley. Peruways books both.
Vistadome is PeruRail’s panoramic service: wraparound side and ceiling windows, a snack and drink service, and a short Andean dance performance on the return leg. Expedition is the same tracks and same schedule at a lower fare, with large side windows but no onboard show. The Belmond Hiram Bingham sits at the other end — brunch outbound, four-course dinner on the way back, a bar car with live music.
Most services leave from Ollantaytambo, 72 km down the valley from Cusco. The 90-minute ride down to Aguas Calientes passes the Pumatallis gorge and the Km 82 Inca Trail trailhead; from the right-hand window going down, you catch glimpses of Veronica (5,893 m).
At Aguas Calientes, the Consettur bus climbs 30 minutes up 13 switchbacks to the citadel gate. Peruways sells train, bus and entrance ticket in one checkout.
