The Rainbow Mountains — Vinicunca — are one of the stranger landscapes in Peru. The ridge sits in the Andes south of Cusco at over 5,000 meters, with mineral layers running across it in red, yellow, green, and pink bands.

The colors come from different minerals oxidizing at different rates: red from iron oxide, yellow from iron sulfide, green from chlorite. Walking up to the viewpoint, you’re basically looking at a geological cross-section exposed by erosion.

Day trips typically start from Cusco, drive out past Cusipata, and climb a short but steep trail to the ridge. The altitude is the catch — spend at least two nights in Cusco first before attempting the walk.

For a well-organized trip, Peruways runs guided day trips out of Cusco with early pickup, breakfast on the way, and horses available at the trailhead for travelers who’d rather skip the first climb.

Walk Vinicunca with Peruways and get the altitude managed by someone who knows the trail.
