Vinicunca — Rainbow Mountain — tops out at 5,200 m, which puts it higher than Everest Base Camp on the Nepali side (5,364 m is close, but EBC’s acclimatisation profile is softer). It is the single highest-altitude day-trip most travellers do out of Cusco.

The hike itself is short — 1.5 to 2 hours from the trailhead at 4,800 m to the viewpoint — but the thin air is the real test. Symptoms of soroche (acute mountain sickness) include headache, nausea and fatigue, and they hit harder here than at Cusco’s 3,400 m. The usual precaution is to spend two or three nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley first, drink more water than feels normal, and chew coca leaves or sip mate de coca.

Peruways runs small-group day-trips with 4 a.m. hotel pickup, Quechua guides from the local community, breakfast on the way, lunch in the valley, and horses available for the ascent for anyone struggling with altitude. Palcoyo at 4,900 m is a gentler alternative if the 5,200 m climb is too much.
