Hiking to Machu Picchu is still the most rewarding way to arrive. The classic Inca Trail runs about 42 km over four days, passing Dead Woman’s Pass (4,215m) and finishing at the Sun Gate at dawn, with the citadel below.

Permits for the classic trail are capped at 500 per day (around 200 for trekkers, the rest for porters and guides) and must be booked months ahead through a licensed operator. The season runs March to January; the trail closes every February for maintenance.

If permits are gone or you want a different route, the Salkantay Trek (5 days, higher pass at 4,630m, no permit required) and the Lares Trek (3–4 days, through weaving villages) are the two main alternatives. Both end in Aguas Calientes rather than at the Sun Gate.

Peruways handles permits, porters, guides, meals, and the train back to Cusco. For dates, routes, and prices, see Peruways.
