A day trip from Cusco to Vinicunca, better known as Rainbow Mountain, is one of the Andes’ recent discoveries: the striped ridge was buried under glacial ice until roughly a decade ago. The red, ochre, turquoise and gold bands come from iron, copper and sulphur in the sedimentary layers.
Guided tours leave Cusco around 03:00 for the three-hour drive to the trailhead at Pitumarca, then a two-hour hike up to the 5,200-metre viewpoint. You’ll pass Quechua herders with their alpaca and llama flocks, and the air thins noticeably as you climb.
Peruways runs the day with experienced guides, breakfast and lunch at a local community kitchen, and horses available for anyone who wants help on the final push.
Fitness matters less than altitude acclimatisation here. Spend two or three days in Cusco first, drink water, go slow, and the walk is manageable for most travellers.
Book your Vinicunca day with Peruways when you’re ready to add Peru’s most photographed landscape to the Cusco itinerary.
