The stonework at Machu Picchu is dense with meaning that isn’t obvious from the ground. Walking it without a guide gets you the view; walking it with one gets you the sightlines, solstice alignments and purpose of each terrace.

PeruWays works with Cusco-based guides who are licensed by the Ministry of Culture — a requirement at the citadel since 2017. They work in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, and most are archaeology graduates from UNSAAC.

A two-hour guided circuit covers the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Residence, the Sacred Plaza and the agricultural sector. If you’ve booked the longer Circuit 1, your guide also takes you up to the classic postcard viewpoint near the guardhouse.

At PeruWays, the guide is bundled into the Machu Picchu package along with the entry ticket, bus up from Aguas Calientes and train tickets — one confirmation, no backup juggling.

Book the guided version and the citadel stops being a postcard. It becomes a working city you can read.
