A Sacred Valley day tour from Cusco is one of the better uses of 10 hours in Peru. The valley stretches between Pisac and Ollantaytambo along the Urubamba river and holds some of the Incas’ best-preserved sites.

Starting in Cusco (3,400 m) gives you a historical anchor, but the Sacred Valley itself sits lower — around 2,800 m (9,186 feet). That lower altitude is why most tour operators recommend sleeping in the valley rather than Cusco for the first night or two. You acclimatize faster and you’re closer to Machu Picchu.

The standard loop covers Pisac (ruins and the Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday market), Ollantaytambo (the only Inca town still laid out on its original grid), and either Chinchero or Moray depending on the operator. Urubamba is where most of the valley’s hotels and restaurants are.

Peruways runs guided Sacred Valley tours with transport, lunch at a local picantería, and a licensed guide. The itinerary can be customized — add Moray’s circular terraces and the Maras salt pans, or swap in a weaving demonstration in Chinchero.
