The urban zone of Machu Picchu — the residential section — is the part most casual visitors walk past. Peruways’ guides go through it in detail: who lived where, how the different quarters were used, what the Inca domestic economy actually looked like.

The urban zone is divided into three sections: the royal quarter near the Temple of the Sun, the artisan quarter with the Mortars Group and the workshops, and the lower urban zone where the service classes lived. Each has its own stone quality — the royal zone with the finest ashlar masonry, the lower zone with rougher fieldstone.

Guides cover the roofing (long gone, but shown by the mounting pegs still in the gables), the water channels running through the complex, and the layout of the kitchens and storage rooms.
