Poroy Station is a small departure point for Machu Picchu trains, 20 minutes from central Cusco. Here is what to know before you travel.

1. Proximity to Cusco: Poroy is a 20-minute drive from the historic center of Cusco, which makes it a convenient alternative to Ollantaytambo when the schedule works for you.

2. Luxury train departures: Poroy historically served as the departure point for the Belmond Hiram Bingham and Vistadome services. Note: PeruRail has shifted some Poroy departures to other stations seasonally; confirm current departures before booking.

3. Setting: Hills and open Andean views on all sides. A quiet, slower place than Cusco’s downtown and a decent spot to wait for a train.

4. Limited amenities: Waiting area, ticket counter, basic snacks. For long waits or dietary needs, bring food.

5. Altitude: At 3,555 m (11,663 ft), Poroy is higher than central Cusco. Travelers coming straight from the coast should acclimatize before boarding.

6. Boarding: Have your ticket ready and arrive early. The station runs on a tight schedule.

7. Transport: Taxis and shuttles connect Poroy to Cusco and nearby towns. Pre-book a return transfer if you’re arriving back late.
