The Cusco–Machu Picchu train is one of South America’s great rail journeys. Trains leave Poroy (just outside Cusco) or San Pedro station, descend into the Sacred Valley, and follow the Urubamba River through the Andes to Aguas Calientes.

The route ends at Machu Picchu Pueblo, the small town at the base of the ruins. From here a 25-minute shuttle bus climbs the final switchbacks to the citadel entrance.

Peruways books every service class, from the Expedition economy car to the Hiram Bingham luxury train with its gourmet dining and observation lounge. Guides are available for the ruins themselves.
