Taking the train out of the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu is the standard way most travelers reach the ruins, and the ride itself is a highlight. Trains leave Ollantaytambo, drop into the Urubamba gorge, and arrive at Aguas Calientes in about 90 minutes.

The route follows the river through a tightening canyon of cloud forest and dramatic cliffs. From the window you’ll see Vilcabamba’s eastern slopes, Andean orchid patches, and the occasional riverside Inca ruin.

Vistadome-style services add panoramic windows and skylights, with light meals and short on-board dance performances; the Expedition class drops the frills but keeps the view. Both are comfortable.
