Inti Punku — the Sun Gate — is the stone threshold above Machu Picchu where the Inca Trail enters the citadel. The hike up from inside Machu Picchu takes about 1.5 hours and climbs 290 m along original Inca stonework.

At the top, the gate frames the citadel below. On the June solstice, the sun rises directly through the arch and lights the Sun Temple on the valley floor — the alignment is why the gate exists where it does.

Peruways’ guides can walk you through Inti Punku’s ritual function and the solstice geometry. Guided tours include the citadel circuit plus the Sun Gate hike, with early-entry tickets so you reach the gate before the main tour groups.
