Machu Picchu sits in the Peruvian Andes at 2,430m, surrounded by cloud forest and the loop of the Urubamba river. It’s the single most-visited archaeological site in South America, and it earns its visitor count: a well-preserved Inca complex that was never found by the Spanish and never dismantled.
A Journey Through Inca History
The site was built in the 15th century, under Emperor Pachacuti, as a royal estate. The stonework is ashlar — hand-cut blocks fitted together without mortar — and the terraces, temples and plazas blend into the ridgeline rather than fighting it.
The function of the site is still debated. Royal retreat, ceremonial centre, administrative outpost, probably some combination. Its remoteness kept it off the colonial maps, and Hiram Bingham’s 1911 expedition is what brought it into international view.
More Than an Archaeological Wonder
The arrival is part of the thing. The train from Ollantaytambo down the Urubamba gorge, or four days on the Inca Trail, both leave you looking at the citadel for the first time with the physical effort of the approach still in your legs. It changes the way you see the stones.
The classic Inca Trail, the Salkantay and the Lares each hit Machu Picchu from a different direction. The train is the shortest option and gets you to Aguas Calientes in 90 minutes from Ollantaytambo.
Inside the citadel, the main features to spend time on are the Temple of the Sun (window-aligned with the June solstice), the Sacred Rock, the Intihuatana and the agricultural terraces. The three one-way circuits laid out in 2024 cover the site from different angles.
Discover the Magic of Peru
Machu Picchu rewards planning more than most sites. Timed entries, circuit choice, acclimatisation stops — all of it matters.
First-timers and repeat visitors both: there’s always something you didn’t see last time. The Inca Bridge, the Sun Gate, Huayna Picchu, the Machu Picchu Mountain summit — each is a half-day on its own.
