Since the Ministry of Culture’s 2024 reform, a licensed guide is required for first-time entry to Machu Picchu — but even without the rule, a good guide is the single biggest upgrade to the day.
A guide reads the stones for you. Why the Temple of the Sun’s window aligns with the June solstice sunrise. Which blocks were cut from the local granite and which were hauled in. Why the Intihuatana casts no shadow at midday on the equinoxes. Without that layer you’ll see impressive masonry; with it, you’ll see the plan behind the masonry.
The practical layer is real too. The three circuits put in place in 2024 are strictly one-way, which means picking the wrong starting point locks you out of a section. A guide knows which circuit covers the Sacred Plaza, which skips the Watchman’s Hut, and which times the Intihuatana shadow best.
Peruways’ guides are MINCETUR-licensed and work in English, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese. Private tours run 2–3 hours, group tours a little less. We can match the group size and the language to the booking.
Book the guide with the entry at Peruways. They’ll meet you at the main gate.
With or without a guide, Machu Picchu is Machu Picchu. With one, you understand what you’re looking at.
