Cusco to Machu Picchu is one of the great short routes in South America: 90 minutes by road from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, 90 minutes by rail down the Urubamba gorge to Aguas Calientes, 25 minutes by bus up to the citadel. Peruways books every leg.

From the old Inca capital at 3,400m down to the citadel at 2,430m, the route crosses the full Sacred Valley — Pisac, Chinchero, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo. Peruways’ licensed guides can run the valley as a stop on the way out (recommended for acclimatisation) and the rail segment as a straight shot on the way back.

What makes the route work is the sequence. Two nights in the Sacred Valley at 2,800m, one night in Aguas Calientes, 6am entry at the citadel, back to Cusco by evening. It beats the day-return in both pace and photography — morning light at the Watchman’s Hut is better than midday light anywhere.
