Vinicunca — the Rainbow Mountain — is a striped ridge in Peru’s Cusco Region whose iron, copper, and sulfur oxides stack into bands of red, pink, green, and gold. It only became a mainstream destination around 2015 when the glacier retreated enough to expose the striping; now it’s one of the headline day trips from Cusco.

The hike itself is short but tough: 3 hours round-trip from the trailhead at Phulawasipata, with the summit at 5,036 m. The altitude is the real challenge — not the distance — so a few days of Cusco acclimatization first makes a big difference.

Peruways runs guided day trips with the early-morning drive from Cusco, breakfast and lunch, horses available on the way up for anyone struggling with the altitude, and a stop at the Red Valley alongside — fewer tour operators go there, and it’s arguably better than Vinicunca itself.

Book Rainbow Mountain through Peruways and the altitude is still yours, but the logistics aren’t.
