Walking Machu Picchu without a guide is doable — but you’ll see impressive stonework and little else. Since 2024 a MINCETUR-licensed guide is actually required at entry, so the question isn’t whether to hire one, it’s which.

Peruways’ guides are Ministry-licensed, work in English (plus Spanish, French, German, Portuguese), and know the three circuits well enough to read the layout from any angle. The Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, the Three Windows, the Royal Mausoleum — each is engineered around a specific function or alignment.

What a good guide buys you beyond archaeology: pacing. Circuit 2 takes 2–3 hours; a guide knows when to pause so the mid-morning tour groups pass, and when to push through so you reach the Watchman’s Hut before the midday crowds.

Peruways’ Machu Picchu bookings include a licensed guide by default. We match group size, language and pace to the booking — private, shared, or small group.
