The Cusco–Machu Picchu train is the most comfortable way to reach the ruins and one of the more scenic rail runs in South America.
Trains leave from Poroy station (20 minutes outside Cusco) or San Pedro in the city centre, drop into the Sacred Valley through Ollantaytambo, and follow the Urubamba River as it tightens into a gorge through the Andes. From the window you’ll see snow peaks of the Vilcanota range, cloud-forest cliffs, and the occasional Inca ruin on the far bank.
Service classes range from the economy Expedition car to the Vistadome with panoramic windows and skylights, up to the Hiram Bingham — Pullman carriages, gourmet meals, and an observation lounge with a bar.
For bookings across both operators (PeruRail and Inca Rail) in one pass, see Peruways.
Peruways also coordinates the shuttle bus from Aguas Calientes up to the ruins so your transfer timing lines up with your site ticket. Book at Peruways.
