Cusco sits at 3,400 metres (11,200 feet) in the Peruvian Andes — high enough that first-day arrivals from sea level need to pace themselves, and worth the effort for what the city holds.

The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The core is layered: Inca masonry at street level (the famous twelve-angled stone on Hatunrumiyoc, the massive polygonal walls of Loreto), colonial churches built directly on top (the Cathedral, La Compañía), and the modern city threaded around them. Plaza de Armas is the social centre.

Peruways’ Cusco itineraries build in acclimatisation time — two or three nights before any strenuous activity — and coordinate transfers to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.
