The Temple of the Moon is one of Machu Picchu’s most mysterious sites. Carved into a cave on Huayna Picchu Mountain, this sacred Inca site offers a peaceful escape from the crowds. It’s a hidden gem for travelers looking to explore beyond the main citadel.
What Is the Temple of the Moon?
This ancient temple is carved into a natural cave on the steep northern face of Huayna Picchu. The site features stone benches, niches, and an altar, likely used for Inca spiritual rituals. Unlike the main Machu Picchu site, the Temple of the Moon is quiet and less visited.
The trail to the temple branches off from the Huayna Picchu hike. It’s steep and challenging but offers incredible views and a deep sense of mystery. The full hike, including the temple, takes about 4 to 5 hours.
