The train is the most comfortable way to reach Machu Picchu and one of the more scenic rail routes in the Americas. The ride itself is a highlight — the Urubamba gorge, snow peaks of the Vilcanota range, and cloud-forest cliffs pass right outside the window.

Service classes range widely. The Vistadome adds panoramic windows and skylights for a modest premium over the economy Expedition. The Belmond Hiram Bingham sits at the top end — a Pullman-carriage experience with gourmet dining, live Andean music, and an observation lounge with a bar — marketed as a journey rather than a transfer.

Trains leave from Cusco’s Poroy station or from Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley. The Ollantaytambo run is 90 minutes faster and is the standard option for travelers already in the valley.

Booking well ahead is essential — in high season services sell out two to four weeks in advance.
