Cusco’s rainbow flag is often mistaken for a pride banner. It’s actually older than that movement by decades — adopted by the municipality in 1978 as a symbol of Tahuantinsuyo, the Inca empire run from Cusco.

The design is seven horizontal rainbow stripes, drawn from the Andean wiphala pattern used across the pre-Columbian world. You’ll see it flying beside the Peruvian flag over the Plaza de Armas and most civic buildings.

If Cusco is on your itinerary, Peruways books the city tour, Sacsayhuamán, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu as a single trip, with local guides who can explain details like the flag.
