Rainbow Mountain — Vinicunca — is the one natural site in the Cusco region that genuinely looks like the photographs. The red, ochre, green and purple stripes across the ridge are mineral layers (iron oxide, chlorite, limonite) that were buried under glacier until a decade ago. A guided tour is the easier way to visit, mostly for the photography logistics.

The colours intensify under direct, low-angle light. Most tours leave Cusco around 3 am to be on the mountain by 9–10 am before the mid-morning cloud cover closes in. Being there early also means thinner crowds for the final ridge shot.

Good guides earn their fee here. They know the three or four shooting positions along the ridge that avoid the busiest viewpoint, and they understand the pacing — Vinicunca tops out at 5,200 m, which is high enough that pushing the climb kills your photo day.

Bring something warmer than you think you need. The ridge is windy and the air at 5,000 m holds no heat; mornings often start below freezing even in dry season.

Peruways’ Rainbow Mountain day tours cover the pick-up, breakfast, horses from the trailhead if you want them, and the certified guide. Have a look at the options at Peruways — the day is more rewarding when the logistics are handled.
