Vinicunca — Peru’s Rainbow Mountain — has turned into one of the Cusco region’s most-visited day trips in the last decade. The red, pink, green and gold mineral layers across the ridge are iron oxide and chlorite, exposed when the local glacier retreated. The site sits at 5,200 m, which is the main planning constraint.
The standard day hike starts from the Cusipata trailhead at 4,600 m. Expect 90 minutes to 2 hours up to the ridge, slightly less back. Horses are available at the trailhead for travellers who’d rather save their legs. The altitude is what catches people out — acclimatise in Cusco for a few days before you try this.
Peruways runs the day tour from Cusco with early pick-up (around 3 am), breakfast on the way, a certified guide at the trailhead and the return by late afternoon. One booking covers transport, entry, breakfast, lunch and the guide.
If you’re already fit, acclimatised and up for an altitude day, Vinicunca is a straightforward add to a Cusco trip. Book through Peruways and set it up for day three or four of your stay — not day one. The colours and the altitude both reward a bit of patience.
