Yucay sits in the middle of the Sacred Valley, between Urubamba and Calca, and reliably punches above its tourist profile. Terraced slopes rise on both sides, the Vilcanota river runs through the valley floor, and the town itself is one of the quieter Inca-era settlements left in the region. Travelers passing through for Machu Picchu often wish they’d stayed longer.

A Living Canvas of History and Nature

Yucay was a royal retreat for Sayri Tupac, an Inca ruler who negotiated with the Spanish in the 1550s. The colonial-era structures that followed sit alongside the earlier Inca terracing, and the two layers overlap on most streets in town. Stone-paved paths lead past 16th-century adobe walls and still-worked agricultural terraces, with the Andes rising on both sides.

The main plaza is framed by a Spanish-colonial church and a row of restored colonial buildings. From here, the valley is walkable in both directions — south toward Urubamba, north toward Calca — along stretches that haven’t fundamentally changed in a century.

A Gateway to Adventure

Yucay is also an underused base for Sacred Valley hiking and horseback riding. Trails from town lead to unmaintained Inca sites, high-pampa viewpoints, and small waterfalls back in the side valleys. For the mainstream sights — Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu — Yucay is about 90 minutes closer than Cusco.

Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Machu Picchu are all 30 to 90 minutes away by road and rail, which makes Yucay a quieter base than Urubamba town for valley-wide exploring.

Experience Authentic Andean Culture

Yucay stays off the main tourist route. The weekly local market, family-run weaving workshops, and small Andean festival calendar all run on a scale that still works for the people who live here. Family-run restaurants serve choclo con queso (large-kernel corn with fresh cheese) or trucha frita (fried trout from the valley’s streams) at prices half what the Cusco restaurants charge.
