To reach the citadel via the Machu Picchu train, travelers can opt for one of the 3 following transportation routes:
1. CUSCO TO MACHU PICCHU BY TRAIN 🚂
Embark on a memorable ride with direct or semi direct trains to Machu Picchu. Travelers can choose to depart from Central Cusco’s San Pedro Station or from Poroy (30 minutes away from Central Cusco). Do note that direct services from San Pedro (Cusco) and semi direct trains from Poroy are limited.
From July 26th to December 31st, direct trains from/to Poroy and Cusco (San Pedro) will operate as dual service (Bus + Train) due to railway maintenance. Travel by train will only be between Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu Station during this period.
2. CUSCO TO MACHU PICCHU BY ROAD + TRAIN 🚐+🚂
Most of trains depart from Ollantaytambo Station, located 1h 30m from Cusco. If traveling from or to Central Cusco without a direct train, you can use a courtesy shared shuttle transport between Cusco and Ollantaytambo, and board a train between Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu.
For available train options, choose Cusco and Machu Picchu as your departure/arrival points.
3. OLLANTAYTAMBO TO MACHU PICCHU BY TRAIN 🚂
Those who do not wish to use the courtesy shuttle from or to Cusco can also choose to travel independently to or from Ollantaytambo. As the majority of trains to Machu Picchu depart from Ollantaytambo (1h 30m from Cusco), this station offers a wide range of train options.
Each train journey offers unique onboard experiences. Some train classes captivate passengers with live shows, while others serve a variety of delectable meals and snacks. Whether you’re enjoying a traditional Peruvian performance or indulging in culinary delights, there’s something for every traveler.
The trains emphasize passenger comfort with their thoughtful design. Expansive windows in each carriage provide travelers panoramic views of the breathtaking landscape. Plus, certain train classes come with observatory wagons, offering an unobstructed view of the mesmerizing surroundings.
Remember, not all train classes provide the same amenities and comfort. To ensure the best journey, it’s recommended travelers check the offerings of each class before securing a ticket.
Whether you’re starting from the Wanchaq station in Cusco or embarking from Puno, you’re in for a treat. Awaiting your departure, a cozy room offers complimentary beverages. After check-in, your luggage is safely stored, and you’re ushered to your elegant seat. The train showcases a luxurious 1920s Pullman design, complete with dining sections, a kitchen, and a bar-equipped observation car.
Departures from Cusco to Puno are set for Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, while returns from Puno to Cusco are on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Mondays. Your ticket ensures you two meals, which are lunch and afternoon tea. However, it doesn’t cover breakfast and additional drinks from the bar.
