The train is the standard way into Machu Picchu, and the Urubamba gorge the ride passes through makes it one of the great short rail trips in South America. Services run from Cusco (Poroy) or Ollantaytambo down to Aguas Calientes, below the citadel itself.

Three main service tiers cover the range. The Expedition is the budget seat with standard windows. The Vistadome adds panoramic skylights and onboard entertainment. The Belmond Hiram Bingham is PeruRail’s premium service — vintage 1920s-style Pullman carriages, four-course meal, open bar, live music. Inca Rail runs a parallel line-up (Voyager, 360°, First Class) from Ollantaytambo.

Book early for high season (June through September, plus Christmas and Easter weeks). Peruways bundles the rail ticket with Machu Picchu entry and the Consettur shuttle up to the gate — three separate inventories, one checkout.
