The Machu Picchu Energy Drink is a Peruways-stocked blend made for the altitude the citadel sits at. Formulated around maca root, caffeine and B-vitamins, it’s designed as a lighter alternative to the sugary energy drinks sold in Aguas Calientes shops before the climb — most travellers take one on the Consettur bus up or at the gate at 2,430 m before entering the circuit.
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a Peruvian cruciferous root that has been cultivated in the Puna for about 2,000 years and is traditionally eaten before high-altitude work; the caffeine and B-complex sit alongside it as a straightforward pick-me-up. Each can has roughly 80 mg of caffeine — about one shot of espresso.
Useful for the Huayna Picchu climb (300 m up on exposed stone stairs) or the Machu Picchu Mountain ascent (3,082 m summit, three-hour round-trip). The Vinicunca day-trip to 5,200 m is the other obvious use case.
Available through Peruways, bundled with the entrance and Consettur bus if you want it packed in your pickup kit.
