The Lares trek is the perfect tour for visitors who like the adventure and nature but it is also a good alternative to the Inca Trail. You will visit the Lares region, which is located within the Sacred Valley, where you will be able to see how the local people live. There you will learn all about life in isolated villages and become familiar with locals culture and traditions.

During your trek towards the Inca Citadel thought the Andean mountains you will also be able to see impressive glaciers, espectacular lakes and waterfalls and beautiful lamas.

In Ollantaytambo to you board the iconic train to Aguas Calientes and before the end of the tour you will visit the impressive Inca city of Machu Picchu.

Day 1: Cusco - Calca - Lares - Wacawasi
Day 1: Cusco - Calca - Lares - Wacawasi

You will be picked at your hotel within Central Cusco at around 6:00am with a minibus to go towards the Sacred Valley. You will make a first stop in the town of Calca where you will visit the local market. Then you will continue your minibus ride to the Lares area (3260 amsl). There you will be able to go to hot spring to relax and take your lunch before the beginning of the trek.

After your lunch you will start a 4 hours trek towards the first campsite.
On your way to the campsite you will cross a stream and you will enjoy the beautiful landscapes along the valley.
You will arrive to the town of Wacawasi where you will be able to see local people with their traditional ponchos and colorful hats. Then you will continue your trek on the mountains for 40 minutes until you arrive to the campsite which located at 3880 amsl. You will take your dinner and will stay there for the first night.

Day 2: Ipsaykassa - Ipsaycocha - Patacancha

On this second day you will wake up early in the morning and after taking your breakfast you will start your trek up to the Puna. The Puna is located in a high level area of the Andes where the plants are limited and you will see mainly ichu plants. . You will continue your trek up until you arrive the highest point called Ipsaykassa ( located at 4550 amsl.) where you will be able to see Lamas, Alpacas and Sheeps but also traditional stone houses.
There you will take a break to enjoy the high level andes landscape before continue your trek down.
After your break you will continue your trek down for 30 minutes until you arrive to the beautiful Ipsaycocha lake, where you will take your lunch.

After lunch you will continue your trek down. On the way you will notice how the landscape change while you walk down to a lowest altitude.

You will arrive to the town of Patacancha where you will stay for the night. There you will be able to meet a local family and if you are brave enough taste guinea pig as dinner (other options are available).

Day 3: Pallata - Pumamarca - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes

On this third day, after taking your breakfast you will take a 40 minutes minibus ride to Pallata. From there you will a walk to the archeological site of Pumamarca and you will make guided your. This site was an important administration place during the Inca's empire. After Pumamarca tour you will continue with your trek for 3 hours following the old Inca trail and then walking near the Patacancha river until your arrive to Ollantaytambo town.

In Ollantaytambo you will have your lunch and then you will have free time to relax. Later in the afternoon you will visit central Ollantaytambo town and the Qolqas Incas, which are old and picturesque Inca's storage buildings.

Afterwards you will take your dinner in a local restaurant before talking a the popular train to Aguas Calientes.

You will stay in Aguas Calientes in a hotel for the night.

Days 4: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco
Days 4: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

On this last day, you will wake up early in the morning and after taking your breakfast you will meet your Machu Picchu guide and you will take the bus together to go to Machu Picchu

You will make a guided visit in Machu Picchu where you will be able to see the Inca Palace, the Sun temple, the Intiwatana temple and other important temples. After the tours you will have free time to take mazing pictures.

After your Machu Picchu visit, you take a bus back to Aguas Calientes and then in the afternoon your train back to Ollantaytambo and shuttle back to Cusco. You will be drop-off at your hotel.

Important Information about the tour
Transportation:

This tour package includes a shared transportation by minubus between Cusco and Lares as part of the Lares tour on day 1. The hotel pickup service is only provided from hotels/accommodation within central Cusco with easy access.

The tour package also include a shared shuttle service by minibus between Ollantaytambo to Cusco on day 4. Passengers will be dropped-off in at their hotel in central Cusco or in Plaza Regocijos or Plaza San Francisco if the hotel is outside central Cusco or with difficult access.

Train Tickets:

This activity includes train tickets on Expeditions trains or Voyager Trains only. It does not includes tickets on highest train categories such as 360 or Vistadome.


Machu Picchu Ticket:

The ticket included in this package is a Machu Picchu ticket to visit the Citadel. This ticket does not include the hike to one of the mountains. Visitors, who want to hike one of the mountains, must add as extra this option during the booking process.
Please note that the access time to Machu Picchu will be the 6am slot unless there are no spaces available for that slot. If there are no spaces available for the 6am slot you will be booked for the next available slot (7am, 8am...). We highly recommend to book your tour enough in advance in order to secure the spaces.

Accommodation:

A basic hostel in Aguas Calientes is included in this package. If visitors want to upgrade your hotel you can add request it on the extra section during the booking process.

When and where does the tour start?
The departure time on day 1 will be at around 6:00am. The pick up at your hotel at around 5:30-6:00am. You will receive a confirmation email to confirm the tour and times.
When and where does the tour end?
On Day 4 after the guided visit to Machu Picchu you will be stay in Machu Picchu on your own. You will need make be sure you go back to Aguas Calientes on time to take your train back to Ollantaytambo. Once in Ollantaytambo a member of the staff will be waiting for you at the train station exit door to drive you back to Cusco. You will be dropped off at your hotel in Central Cusco or in Plaza Regocijos or Plaza San Francisco if your hotel is outside central Cusco or with difficult access.
When is recommended to arrive to Cusco?
It is recommended to arrive in Cusco at least 2 days before the tour in order to acclimatize and get used to the altitude. If you cannot arrive 2 days in advance it is strongly recommended to arrive the day before the tour because the tours start very early in the morning.
